Your Menopause Symptoms Are a Metabolism Problem.
Here's what that means for how you actually get well.
Jodie Studley | Naturopath, Metabolic Balance Practitioner & Emotional Dynamics Coach | May 2026
Nobody warned you your metabolism would change this much.
That's the gap I see every week in clinic. Women doing everything right — eating well, moving their bodies, trying to manage their stress — and still not getting the results they used to get. The weight sits differently. The energy doesn't recover the way it did. The sleep is fragmented even when nothing is obviously wrong.
What most women haven't been told is that the rules genuinely changed. Not because of willpower, not because of effort — because of physiology. The hormonal shift of perimenopause and menopause changes how your body manages blood sugar, stores fat, responds to stress, and produces energy. And when you try to address symptoms without understanding that, you're working against your own biology.
Here's what's actually happening — and why it matters for what you do next.
Hormones don't lead the way, they follow your metabolism
This is the shift that changes everything for the women I work with. We've been taught to think of menopause as a hormone problem — oestrogen drops, things fall apart, manage the symptoms. But that's only part of the picture.
Hormones are responsive. They behave according to the internal environment around them. Your oestrogen, progesterone, cortisol, thyroid hormones — they all follow what's happening in your blood sugar, your stress system, your sleep quality, and your inflammatory load. When that foundation is dysregulated, the hormones reflect it. And when you stabilise the foundation, the hormones recalibrate.
This is why two women with similar hormone levels can have completely different experiences of menopause. The hormone numbers don't tell the whole story. The metabolic environment does.
Stabilise the metabolic foundation. The hormones follow.
What's actually changing in your body
Oestrogen does a lot of work that most people don't appreciate until it starts to shift. One of its less-discussed roles is helping regulate blood sugar. As oestrogen declines, insulin sensitivity often changes with it — your body starts responding differently to carbohydrates, blood sugar swings become more pronounced, and the downstream effects of that are significant.
When blood sugar spikes and crashes repeatedly, your body releases cortisol to stabilise it. Cortisol is a survival hormone. In a survival state, your body holds fat — particularly around the abdomen. It disrupts sleep architecture. It amplifies anxiety. It increases inflammatory load. And research clearly shows it can trigger and worsen vasomotor symptoms like hot flushes and night sweats.
Cortisol also suppresses thyroid function. And thyroid hormones regulate your metabolic rate — how efficiently your body produces and uses energy. Fatigue that doesn't lift with rest, weight that won't shift despite eating carefully, brain fog, cold sensitivity — these are thyroid signs. They're also menopause signs. The overlap is significant, and without looking at the full picture, things get missed.
Normal on a blood test is not the same as optimal in your body. Standard reference ranges are wide. I use your blood chemistry to find out what's actually happening in your metabolism — not just whether you sit inside a broad population range.
Why your symptoms make more sense through a metabolic lens
Hot flushes and night sweats. Oestrogen decline is part of this picture, but blood sugar instability and cortisol spikes are significant triggering factors. When blood sugar is stabilised through personalised nutrition, many women find the frequency and intensity of hot flushes reduces considerably. That's not a coincidence — it's physiology.
Weight that won't shift. If cortisol is chronically elevated, insulin resistance is building, and metabolic flexibility has reduced, your body is not in a fat-burning state — regardless of how carefully you're eating by general standards. Not all healthy food is healthy for everyone. Your blood chemistry tells us what works specifically for you. Generic approaches produce generic results.
Brain fog. Blood sugar swings, thyroid slowdown, and sleep fragmentation all impair cognitive clarity. When those things are addressed at the root, the fog lifts. Most women are relieved to understand it was never about losing their mind — it was about a metabolic system under load.
Broken sleep. Elevated cortisol at night, blood sugar dropping in the early hours, and declining progesterone all disrupt sleep. Fix the metabolic drivers and sleep often changes quickly. It's consistently one of the first things clients notice.
Mood changes and anxiety. Blood sugar swings directly affect neurotransmitter regulation. Cortisol disrupts serotonin and GABA pathways. And the emotional load many women carry at this life stage — the responsibilities, the accumulated stress, the decades of giving more than they've received — this isn't separate from the physiology. The nervous system is part of the metabolism.
What root-cause support actually looks like
The women I see have often already tried the standard approaches. Hormone therapies, supplements off the shelf, diets from the internet. Some have helped partially. Most haven't delivered lasting results — because the metabolic foundation wasn't addressed.
What I do is look at the whole system. Your blood chemistry. The way your body is managing blood sugar and cortisol. Your thyroid markers and nutritional status. Your sleep, your gut health, your inflammatory load. And from that complete picture, we build a personalised plan that uses food, timing, lifestyle support, and where appropriate, evidence-based herbal and nutritional medicine.
The Metabolic Balance program sits at the centre of this work for many of my clients. It uses your own pathology results to identify the precise foods that support your metabolism — this is not a template, not a trend, not a one-size approach. It's your biology. Combined with the hormonal and nervous system support I provide through the Menopause Harmony program, this is what root-cause medicine actually looks like in practice.
The science here is well-established — insulin resistance during menopause, the role of cortisol in fat storage and symptom amplification, the metabolic effects of oestrogen decline. This is documented in peer-reviewed research and reflected in current clinical understanding. The difference is applying it to you, specifically, with precision.
Your body is speaking to you. The goal isn't to silence the symptoms. It's to understand what they're telling you.
What becomes available
These are the words I hear most often when a client's metabolic health is genuinely supported. My energy is back for the whole day, not just in the morning. My weight is finally moving and I'm not restricting my foods. The hot flushes are so much less frequent. My mind feels clear again. I'm sleeping. I feel like myself.
This is not the result of pushing harder or finding more willpower. It's the result of working with your biology rather than against it. The science may sound complicated. The steps, when they're right for your body, are simpler than you'd expect.
You're not in decline. You're in a transition that your body can navigate well, with the right support.
